Proposals for the Plan Commission, Hwy 51, Firefighters, and a bike blender

August 5, 2016 7:55 AM

Hi neighbors,

It's another great summer week in Madison!!

District 3 Plan Commission Items

Well it's back to the plan commission meeting for me next Monday. I'm thinking of installing a little mini fridge there for iced coffee and snacks.

This next Monday (8/8 beginning at 5:30pm in Room 201 of the City County Building), the plan commission will take up two items concerning District 3. The first is the proposed multi-family development at 114 Milky Way.

After two neighborhood meetings about this development, we discovered some serious concerns about traffic in the Grandview North neighborhood and on Milwaukee Street in general. As always with traffic calming measures, there is a chicken and egg issue, that is, we need enough traffic volume and density to justify the traffic calming investment. It also helps to have citizen support.

Our city engineering department has a lot to monitor and while I am happy to continue to advocate on our behalf, it would also be really helpful for the department to hear from you. As we discussed at the neighborhood meetings, there is a process by which citizens can petition for traffic calming measures. Here is more info about undertaking that process, and here is a link to an official petition. I would strongly encourage you to be in touch with our traffic engineering staff before starting your petition to make sure that you have all your ducks in a row (in a freshly painted crosswalk) and the process can go as smoothly as possible. Madison is a capital of citizen action and I am excited that we have this option. Please contact me for whatever support you may need in undertaking something like this. I will of course continue to advocate for us as well.

The second District 3 item before the plan commission is a conditional use update for the property at 902 Atlas Avenue. It's currently an auto service center and Phillips 66 gas station. The property was rezoned a number of years ago and without anyone recognizing it or getting too concerned, the existing business fell outside what are called 'conforming uses' for parcel. This update will allow for what has been happening on the parcel for the last couple of decades to, you know, keep happening.

Open House at Goodman Youth Garden

Ever made salsa while riding a bike? Well this is Madison so making salsa, guacamole, or smoothies while biking is totally possible. Join us for a community open house at the Goodman Youth Farm tomorrow Sat 8/6 from 1pm-3pm (5017 Sudbury Way) to check out their operation, have a go on their bike blender (the blender runs on your pedaling), watch a beekeeping demonstration (2pm), and even plant some fall crops. This event is free and all ages are invited.

Firefighter Fun Day

A week from tomorrow, on Saturday August 20th, Fire Station #5 (4418 Cottage Grove Rd) opens its doors for the annual Firefighter Fun Day. Climb around on the trucks, tour the fire station, and have a snack. Event runs from 1pm-4pm; please kindly remember to park off site so as to not to block in the emergency vehicles

---

Also on Saturday, August 20th is the Fittest Farmhand Challenge CrossFit Competition at the Alliant Energy Center. The event runs from 10am-4pm and admission is free. Your very own alder will be competing on a team, and if you want to come set up cheers of 'sprint faster, install roundabouts!' or 'lift more, support re-zoning!' it would be great to see you there.

Lane Markings on Freshly Chip-Sealed Roads

As you may have noticed, we've got lane line and parking lines painted on our freshly sealed road surfaces. (This means that the guy drifting into my lane while we were both northbound on Sprecher the other day had no excuse /grumble grumble) More importantly, we have newly refurbished streets and freshly-painted lane markings.

Hwy 51: The Epic Saga in Multiple Parts

The DOT has quite an operation planned for this weekend wherein they are undertaking to make big improvements to the Hwy 51/Broadway intersections as fast as possible over the course of just a few days. Technically you will still be able to use the intersection during this time but your best bet would be to use alternate routes. The faster the crews can work, the faster the work can get done so I will be supporting their work by staying away from the intersection this weekend.

From our partners at WisDOT:

WB Beltline traffic:  To Monona Drive, then north towards Pflaum Road.  Right onto Pflaum Road and then east back to USH 51.

EB Beltline traffic:  Exit at West Broadway, then east towards Monona Drive.  Left onto Monona Drive and then north to Pflaum Road.  Right onto Pflaum Road and then east back to USH 51.

Broadway traffic:  Will be significantly impacted and will be directed to the detour route outlined above.  Access will be maintained to the Park and Ride.

Work is expected to begin at 8:00 p.m. on Friday August 5th and be completed with all lanes of traffic opened at 5:30 a.m. on Monday August 8th.

Thanks and be well and have a great weekend

Your alder,
Amanda Hall
