Request TPC to study moving buses from Jenifer to Willy St

July 10, 2016 10:25 PM

Greetings everyone-

I have formally asked the Transit and Parking Commission to study the idea of rerouting Metro buses from Jenifer to Williamson. The topic is being introduced at the Wednesday July 13 TPC meeting with a staff report outlining proposed steps.

Unfortunately tonight (7/10) the city is having an issue with broken links to agendas for city meetings so I can't share the meeting info, hopefully it will be fixed soon. The meeting starts at 5p in room 201 CCB. According to the staff report, staff will review the data from the detour and TPC will seek public comments in a series of public hearings with the goal of making a decision by the time Jenifer St reconstruction is completed in the late fall.

I want to be clear I have not decided that the buses should be moved from Jenifer to Willy.  I am responding to requests from neighbors to study the issue further. It has been a topic of interest in the Marquette neighborhood for almost a decade.

During the planning for the reconstruction of Jenifer St, residents discussed the Metro detour (first proposed to go to E Wash) and the idea came up of relocating the bus routes permanently to Williamson St. During the MNA planning process, many neighbors on Jenifer complained about the speed of buses and traffic speed in general. In addition, neighbors adjacent to the timed stop at Ingersoll have shared concerns about buses blocking access to their driveways and reducing the visibility of vehicles and bicyclists which creates a dangerous condition when exiting their driveways.

Adding bus stops to Willy means eliminating some street parking. I think everyone knows the importance of parking for our local business district. What you may not realize is the 1200 block of Williamson has been hardest hit by the temporary removal of parking.

?With the detour in place, we have an opportunity to see what bus service on Willy is like in real time, study the data and find out what bus riders, business owners and neighbors think.  I know Jenifer St neighbors and Willy St business owners will listen to each others concerns and the neighborhood will carefully weigh the issues. I will make sure that the TPC meetings are noticed on the MNA list serve and my alder email list.

Marsha
