Crossing the Digital Divide

May 8, 2014 12:27 PM

It's both rewarding and exciting to watch a budget amendment turn into something real! Last year, I sponsored a resolution to allocate $150,000 from the capital budget towards providing internet access to a low income neighborhood; and today, the Digital Technology Committee will review ten innovative programs which aim to expand internet access in Madison.

To highlight just one of the ten ideas, the Worthington Park Neighborhood Association has submitted a proposal which addresses computer access, internet access, and education. Their goal is to create a network of 150 indoor nodes which would provide full neighborhood coverage, and work alongside existing educational and workforce development partners. Furthermore, a neighborhood association membership would also have potential to include internet access.

Additional ideas have been submitted by the Boys & Girls Club, Brentwood Neighborhood, Centro Hispano, East Madison Community Center, Kennedy Heights, Madison Dream Project, Madison Public Library, Resilient Neighborhood Center, and the Work and Learn Center. All applications can be viewed by clicking here. Additional applicants and ideas will be heard at the committee meeting.

If you are interested in this topic, please join the Digital Technology Committee tonight at 5 pm, City-County Building room 201. This meeting will also be covered by City Channel.
