Public Hearing Regarding New Lighting on Spring Street

November 29, 2011 3:14 PM

Tomorrow the Board of Public works will be conducting a public hearing regarding assessment of construction costs and new lights on two blocks of North Orchard and Spring Street. The total assessment to the property owners within the area will be approximately 1 million dollars, with $196,000 allocated for new pedestrian lighting. The new lighting will serve nearly 1,000 students who live in the area.

The City will be replacing the sanitary and storm water sewers, curb and gutter, pavement, and sidewalk. Much of the infrastructure along the four city blocks is poor condition: the pavement received a city grade 4/5 out of 10 and the curbs 2/4 out of 10. Moreover, some of the water piping dates back to the 1890's.

Of a former resident of Spring Street, I am very excited to hear the city and property owners are moving forward with new lighting. This will create a safer environment for students in the area, and provide a better ambiance for students living on that side of campus.

Construction for the project is slated over the summer, and will run from May 21st to August 17th. The hearing will start at 6:30 pm at 210 Martin Luther King Jr, room 108. Students are encouraged to speak.
