Be Diligent When Walking Home at Night

December 21, 2011 3:25 PM

Last night at 4:05 am, a 19-year-old female UW-Madison student was attacked on North Carroll Street while walking home alone after studying. The victim was punched by the several times before the assailant fled, presumably after hearing a near-by car.

The suspect was described as a male in his 20s, possibly Hispanic, 5 feet, 7 inches tall, clean shaven, with a short buzz cut haircut, wearing a black wool pea coat and dark jeans. This battery is similar to two muggings in July where women have been attacked while walking alone.

I have been in consultation with the Madison Police Department regarding this incident. After speaking about this with Capitan Carl Gloede he reminds students "should be aware of their surroundings and ideally, never walk alone at night, especially females." The UW provides numerous free services to get students home safely including SAFEride and SAFEwalk. SAFEride hours are extended until 6 am during finals and can be reached by calling 262-5000.

I would also encourage anyone who's preparing for a late night study session to have a plan in place to get home. Remember to walk to a group and travel on major streets. Don't hesitate to use UW services or call a friend late at night.

Anyone with information about the attack early Wednesday morning or the two in July is asked to call Madison Area Crime Stoppers, 266-6014.
