Updated City Legislative Center

May 23, 2012 2:15 PM

The City is happy to unveil our new legislative center that will allow web-goers to better access information on ordinances and meetings. It is now easier to conduct searches, downtown information, and track ordinances through the legislative process. Student reporters should be excited about the new system.

For example, let's say you are interested in tracking the newly introduced lock's ordinance. Here is the process for receiving updates:

1. Click on the Legislative link on any alder website or from the Legislative Center tab on the City homepage.

2a. If you are searching from my council page, the second tab bar contains a link to all legislation I have sponsored while in office (and for other alders, dating back to 2004). The lock ordinance is legislative file number 26401

2b. Search for the word "locks" in the keyword search with the "this year" filter. The only result is current the ordinance.

3. Clicking on the legislative file number provides a detailed history and full text of the ordinance. The committee responsible for the next action outlined on the right side of the page.

4. Email and RSS are also helpful for tracking a particular piece of legislation.  Emails can update you on a daily, weekly or monthly basis. Users can sign up for these alerts through the buttons on the upper right side of the page.

Similar information can be found on committee calendars, agendas and minutes. Vacancies on city committees can also be quickly identified using this tool (although not all information may be updated quite yet).

I have not explored all the new features inside the legislative center, but so far my reviews are positive. I will be interested to learn about public API's that might be a available in the new software or methods developers can use to promote the legislative process.
