Learn about the budget tonight

October 15, 2012 8:53 AM

Tonight, myself and County Board Supervisor Leland Pan will be holding a joint forum to discuss the 2013 City of Madison and Dane County budgets. The event will be held from 5:30 to 6:30 pm in the SAC, room 3161.

This event will mark the first time where students can provide input on both their county and city budgets at the same time.

Each budget process is slightly different. In the county, Executive Joe Parisi introduces his version of the budget.  Over the course of the next month, Dane County Board of Supervisors reviews this budget and adds their own amendments and changes to it.  Dane County's budget is around the 500 million dollar mark, with about half of that for human services.  Funding for the budget comes mostly from state and federal revenue, property taxes, and sales taxes.  Through elected supervisors, students have an opportunity to push funding for services important to them and new ideas are always welcome.

The City budget is smaller at 266 million dollars. A majority of the budget is allocated to police and fire services, roughly 109 million dollars. The remainder of the budget covers city services such as Metro buses, road construction and public libraries. Some projects in this year's budget that apply directly to students include: additional money for downtown police officers, the reconstruction of Library Mall, the removal of move-out day overtime, and new pedestrian lights on North Charter Street.

At the event, we will both provide a short presentation on each budget. The remainder of the time will be used for question and answers.
