Bridge Concepts

Description

Bridge Concept Locations

In November, 2013, the Committee recommended the Consultant Team explore bridge concepts for locations 3, 4, and 6 (see map). In December, 2013, the Committee recommended the further development of two bridge concepts at these locations-- a wide plaza bridge and a narrow bike/pedestrian connection bridge.

The location of the plaza bridge concept is dependent on potential opportunities to partner with a Wilson Street development project. The narrow bike/pedestrian connection concept will be developed to show it would be successful on both the east and west sides of Monona Terrace. The Consultant Team and Steering Committee also supported the recommendation of a wide park/plaza concept, which has been fully developed into a 3D model by a citizen.

The recommended bridge concepts include the following elements:

Plaza bridge concepts designed for locations 3 or 4
• Wide/plaza bridge (20' – 150' wide)
• Curvilinear or straight design
• Separates bike/pedestrian uses
• Creates unique opportunity for landmark structure
• Uses opposing ramps to create a dock-like structure
• Formal plaza and sloped turf areas create opportunities for different user groups
• Builds on existing spiral structure context
• Potential to provide seating, café, and other amenities
• Combines stairs and spiral structure
• Incorporates a formal promenade with intimate and larger gathering spaces
• Creates an overlook to the lake integral to the plaza

Narrow bike/pedestrian connection bridge concept designed for location 6
• Narrow bridge (<20' wide)
• Elevated shared path (bikes/pedestrians)
• Builds on existing spiral structure context
• Includes gathering spaces around the spiral structure and overlook
• Minimal encroachment into existing water edge
• Incorporates a choke point that creates a natural caution area encouraging thought before proceeding through
• Can be mirrored on each side of Monona Terrace

The bridge should be located as close to Monona Terrace as possible. This would minimize site line disruption and move traffic into an area already designed for it.

All of the bridge locations for the east end are exactly where the water ski shows take place. The shows have been tried in other locations of the shoreline and this is the only remaining area with enough water depth to accommodate the boats and tricks safely.

The shows also include bleacher sections that are setup in the park, so it is not just about water use. It is land use as well.

Location 3 is the only design that might work if the elevation of the ramp overhead is high enough to allow spectating from under it. It is also the most appealing in my opinion.

I would like to see a design that moves the traffic entry points to the current bike path, heading east and at least 100 ft east of the corner.

Two concerns with Bridge Concept Locations 3 and 4: impact on summer ski shows and much additional noise for residents in the Marina, the possible new 149 E. Wilson apartment building, and Union Transfer.

Consideration should be given to site lines for homeowners and businesses along this corridor.

The first two concepts appeal more to me because they are not just linear transportation connections. The third seems far to long and skinny to be useful to anyone but bicyclists, and maybe not even to them. I'd like to see something that creates real public space, perhaps even bigger and wider than shown here.
