Q: What does this Building Permit allow me to do?

A: This application is for a building permit to do only the following work:

  1. Roofing
  2. Siding
  3. Windows and Doors (Please note: You cannot change the size of the opening. If you are changing the size or creating a new window or door opening, you must submit plans to the City of Madison before beginning any new construction.)

Any other type of work must be applied for in person at the Inspection Unit Room LL-100, Madison Municipal Building, 215 Martin Luther King Blvd.

Q: Is the property address my mailing address, or the address of where the work is being done?

A: The property address is where the work is being done, not your mailing address.

Q: Do you take applications for properties outside of the City of Madison?

A: No, we do not accept applications for properties outside of the City of Madison. Please look-up the address to make sure that the address is in the City of Madison: http://www.cityofmadison.com/assessor

Q: What is a dwelling unit?

A: Dwelling units are separate apartments or living spaces.

Q: How long will it take for my application to be processed?

A: Your application will normally be processed the next business day and mailed or faxed to you that same day. If the property is in a Historic District or Urban Design District, the approval process may take longer due to staff review, and/or need to contact the customer for details or plans.
