The East Washington Avenue 
Reconstruction Project Website

The City of Madison, Wisconsin and the Wisconsin Department of Transportation are reconstructing East Washington Avenue (USH 151). The project employs context sensitive design in an urban corridor. The project involves the reconstruction of a 4.5 mile section of East Washington Avenue from Blair Street to Thierer Road. The plan is to transform East Washington Avenue into a gateway type street. The existing pavement is being replaced and bike lanes are being added. Many of the existing trees are being maintained. Additional landscaping is supplementing the existing landscaping and special light fixtures are designed to bring a consistent theme to the entire length of the project. Neighborhoods are benefiting by improved pedestrian crossings.

The project is being completed in phases and the construction work began in 2004.  All work on the corridor from Blair Street to Thierer Road is complete except for the final landscaping at STH 30 and the pedestrian bridge over Aberg Avenue which will be completed in the Spring of 2010.

In addition to the segments of East Washington Avenue contained in the original project as outlined above, planning is currently taking place on the replacement of the concrete pavement from Thierer Road to East Springs Drive.  This construction is planned for 2012 or 2013 and will be developed with a separate environmental document.
