Where are you stationed?
Ladder 6 (W. Badger Road) on the A shift.

Why did you want to pursue this career?
Having the opportunity to serve your community on a daily basis is extremely rewarding. The atypical work we do is incomparable and provides a thrill and feeling of achievement that cannot be found in any other career. It is satisfying and eye-opening all at once.

Why did you want to work in Madison, for the Madison Fire Department?
It’s an extremely reputable organization not only locally but nationally as well.  I truly felt that the vision, mission, and core values of the department aligned well with my personal values.

What has been the most rewarding part of your experience so far?
Being able to call yourself a City of Madison Firefighter is quite rewarding in itself. There are so many applicants that go through the process, so having the opportunity to be here and to serve this city makes me grateful each shift.

Now that you have graduated the Academy, what do you look forward to the most?
Learning and getting to know my crew, their work styles, and expectations of me. It’s a fun and challenging transition into station life.

Looking back at the Fire Academy, what was the most challenging element?
I would say the balance of personal life and work life. I had a 3-month-old boy when I started the academy, so that was challenging. I would come home from the academy and would want to spend time with my wife and child but knew that I needed to be diligent and stick to my regimen of studying and reading. It was tough but paid off.

What advice would you give to someone hoping to join the MFD?
Be persistent and diligent about striving to get this job. The process may be long and daunting, but the end goal is well worth it.
