Why did you want to pursue this career?

I gained a strong interest in the fire service at a very young age, after my father was injured from a propane explosion at home. I remember both the firefighters being so nice to me and my family. My interest grew much stronger during my service with the Army. I wanted to work in the same type of working environment that relies on teamwork and selfless service.

Why did you want to work in Madison, for the Madison Fire Department?
I grew up just north of Madison, in Deforest, and as my interest in the fire service grew during my time with the Army, I decided I wanted to make a permanent residence in Madison, which I knew as home. My interest in the fire service grew, but becoming a Madison firefighter became my ultimate goal.

What has been the most rewarding part of your experience so far?
Knowing that every day I come into work I can make a difference for someone in need. No matter what the emergency is, we responded to help someone on the worst day of their life and help in any way we can.

Looking back at the Fire Academy, what was the most challenging element?
The Fire Academy pushes you to your limits both mentally and physically. The Academy truly teaches you how to have a long and prosperous career with the Madison Fire Department. It teaches you how to adapt and overcome obstacles. The Academy showed me there is always something new to learn every day and that we will continue to learn throughout our entire career.

What advice would you give to someone hoping to join the MFD?
The hiring process is a long and stressful process, but through that process you must stay resilient and patient because the end results are 100% worth it. There is no better job on this earth than being a Madison firefighter.
