Today we introduce you to another of the five new lieutenants
promoted within the Madison Fire Department.

How many years have you served with the Madison Fire Department?
 16 years.

What is your new station/shift assignment?
Station 10, C shift.

Why did you want to be a Lieutenant?
I wanted to have the opportunity to work with the members of the Madison Fire Department from a different position within the ranks of the MFD.

How do you describe your leadership style?
I feel it is important to be active (“let’s do it”/ “let’s see it”) and tactile (“let’s get our hands on it”) in fire service training. It’s also important to think about the big picture—remember what is best for the citizens when we respond and then implement the plan with that in mind.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to get on the fire department?
Educate yourself about the MFD, apply yourself to the service, and remember that every day is a workday. Talk with others in the MFD. Continue to take Fire and EMS courses. Listen to others to gain knowledge.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to advance in their career?
You are always gaining knowledge every day you work with your crew and in classes you may take off-duty. Advancing within the fire service starts with Day 1. There is a point when you feel you may be ready to advance – and you will know when that is – and you still continue to learn.

I love this job! It is a great feeling to help others!
