Three Displaced By Overnight Fire
A Hammersley Road resident woke up to the sight and smell of smoke this morning. He went downstairs to find the kitchen on fire. He immediately alerted other occupants about the fire. There were no working smoke detector on the first and second floor.
Occupants called 911 as they evacuated the duplex and waited for help from the Madison Fire Department.
Medic 7 and Ladder Company 7 arrived on scene within five minutes of receiving the call, and they had the fire knocked down just two minutes later. The fire was contained to the kitchen with smoke damage throughout the unit.
Nobody was injured during the incident. All occupants, including a pet bird, made it out safely.
The American Red Cross has provided assistance with temporary accommodations until the unit is habitable again.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. Damage estimates are not yet available.
