Fire
Inspection Unit

Overview
Inspections are a means to identify and eliminate or reduce hazards
which might result in life or property loss. Inspections also ensure
that fire protection systems, such as sprinkler systems, fire alarm
systems, and kitchen hood extinguishing systems are maintained in good
working condition. In the event of a fire, losses will be minimized
through early detection and suppression. Code enforcement is a
proactive and cost effective approach to community fire protection.
Annually, more than 19,000 inspections are conducted by the Madison
Fire Department. The Fire Inspection Unit, under the guidance of
Cheryl Peterson, inspect approximately 4,400 and the firefighters inspect
about 6,800 commercial properties semi-annually. Commercial
properties include residential buildings of 3 units or more, as well as
retail, factories, warehouses, and office buildings. The certified
Fire Code Enforcement Officers and Fire Inspectors coordinate the
inspections performed by firefighters by providing technical assistance
and serving as a liaison between the firefighters and the business owners.

Flammable & Combustible
Tank Inspection Program
The flammable and combustible tank inspection program, which is managed
by Cheryl Peterson and supported by four other certified tank inspectors,
serves to enforce the ground-water protection requirements of the Madison
General Ordinance and the Flammable and Combustible Liquids Code, COMM
10. This is accomplished through the review of plans prior to the
installation of an underground or aboveground storage tank system.
Existing underground & aboveground storage tank systems are inspected annually for
compliance with groundwater protection rules. During the removal of
tanks, a tank inspector is on site to verify compliance with the
requirements of COMM 10 and basic safety guidelines as well as to note any
contamination of the soil or groundwater. For more information on
