Station six

Station 6 is located on Madison’s south side. It is staffed daily with six firefighters who work 24 hour shifts. Station 6 houses Ladder 6, Medic 6, and HIT 6. The firehouse was built in 1986 and replaced the older firehouse located at Park Street and Fish Hatchery Road.

Equipment

  • Ladder 6 – 2009 Pierce Aerial, featuring a 105 aerial ladder. It has a 1500 gallon per minute fire pump and a complement of ground ladders, fire hose, and tools.
  • Medic 6 – 2008 Braun Advance Life Support Paramedic level ambulance
  • HIT 6 – The hazardous materials (Hazmat) response vehicle. HIT 6 stands for Hazardous Incident Team 6. Station 6 houses one of the State of Wisconsin’s Regional Hazmat Response Teams. Firefighters stationed at Station 6 are highly trained Hazardous Materials Technicians who will respond throughout the State to aid in chemical spill mitigation and cleanup. All members are also trained in Weapons of Mass Destruction response.

This vehicle contains:

  • Chemical resistive suits
  • Air monitors
  • Response equipment
  • A research station 
HIT 6 is paired with HIT 5, which is stored at Station 5. HIT 6 is staffed with the firefighters from Ladder 6.

Station #6 is staffed with:

  • 1 Lieutenant – Station officer doubles as HIT leader
  • 1 Apparatus Engineer (driver) – operates the ladder truck
  • 2 Firefighters – staffing the ladder truck
  • 2 Paramedics – Staffing the ambulance (M6)

Many stations develop a specific identity over time, and carry that through with logos that members of the crew display with pride. Located at 825 W. Badger Road, the crew at Station #6 has adopted the motto: Pride of the South Side.
