The Madison Department of Public Health’s Animal Control Officers (267-1989) are available to answer your questions about the City of Madison Ordinances concerning pet ownership and the picking up of dog waste:

• Dog waste is not permitted to be left on the sidewalk, terrace, or any other public place.
  
• Dog owners are required to carry dog waste pickup equipment with them when walking dog in public.
  
• Dog waste is not permitted to accumulate in a private yard and needs to be picked on a regular basis.
  
• Animal Control catches your animal pooping on public property and you do not pick it up, you may be issued a citation.
  
• If Animal Control receives a complaint that your yard is full of dog waste, they will respond and check the situation out. If it is determined that there is a problem you will be given a 48-hour notice to clean up.
  
• If poop is not cleaned up after 48-hour notice you may be issued a citation.
