2003 Achievement Award Winners

The Madison Department of Health is pleased to announce the establishments that have received the year 2003 achievement awards for excellence in food safety. The Achievement award program was started in 1995 to highlight superior work in the area of food safety. Sixty- six out of over 1000-licensed food establishments meet the criteria for the award this year. The food establishments listed have received this award due to their constant attention to food safety, proper training of their staff and ensuring that they meet the Wisconsin Food Code.
Only an elite group of food establishments receive this
award. That is due to the strict
criteria used to qualify for the honor. One
of the criteria includes not having any critical items on the current
inspection. This is difficult to
achieve since there are over one hundred critical violations in the Wisconsin
Food Code any one violation can disqualify a food establishment from receiving
this recognition. Some examples
of critical item violations include: improper handwashing, touching ready to
eat foods with bare hands, improper storage of raw foods, not maintaining
proper food temperatures and improper sanitizing of equipment and utensils.
They also must have a Certified Food Manager on staff, receive a low
inspection score, do not receive a reinspection, not have a confirmed or
suspected food-borne illness and have not received enforcement actions with in
the past two years.
The award winners have been placed in the following
categories: Restaurants, Grocery/deli, Fast food, Bar and Grill and Limited
food handling. The number in the
Awards column identifies how many consecutive awards the food establishment
has won. These establishments do an outstanding job of insuring food safety on
a routine basis. They should be
congratulated on their superior performance.
