Bluegreen Algae in Odana Golf Course Pond
Test results of a water sample collected by the WDNR from a pond on Odana Hills Golf Course on September 21, 2004 indicate that potentially toxic species of blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) were present in the water at that time. However, since the algae do not always produce toxins, and this testing is costly and not performed routinely, it is unknown if the toxin was present in the water.
Under favorable conditions, a large algal bloom can form overnight, frequently rising to the surface as a mat or scum. Activities in water that is visibly rich in blue-green algae should be avoided. No one should be swimming in such places and children and pets should be kept away. Contact your veterinarian if your pet experiences seizures, vomiting or diarrhea after contact with water.
