2001 Season Opening Date Is May 1st For The Clean Sweep – Hazardous Waste Site

The Clean Sweep Program for recycling household hazardous waste will open its 2001 season on Tuesday, May 1, 2001. The Clean Sweep Program provides an opportunity for homeowners of Dane County to safely dispose of hazardous materials, free of charge. The Product Exchange is a program for residents to take, free of charge, the high quality and usable products brought into Clean Sweep. Normal hours of operation are on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 7:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The site is located at 2302 Fish Hatchery Road in Madison, on the corner of Fish Hatchery and Badger Roads.

The Small Business Collection Program accepts materials from small businesses and local units of government. These materials are normally accepted on Wednesdays, prior arrangements need to be made before bringing materials to the site, and there is a per pound charge for use of the Program. Business owners are reminded that they need to allow enough time to request registration materials and to submit an inventory of the materials for recycling. A registration packet is available by calling Dale Cardwell, the Clean Sweep Coordinator, at 294-5358 or can be found on the Dane County Clean Sweep web site.

Clean Sweep will accept agriculturally generated wastes this year. Clean Sweep applied for and received a Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection "Agricultural Clean Sweep Grant" for permanent hazardous waste collection facilities. The grant will underwrite the disposal costs of agriculturally generated wastes, so that there will be no cost to farmers, and agricultural businesses will only pay half of the normal business cost. With this funding, the County hopes to meet the needs of Dane County farmers. All farmers and agricultural-related businesses from Dane County are invited to participate. The agricultural Clean Sweep is by pre-registration and on the following days only: June 13 & 27; July 18; August 16 (In Mt Horeb); September 19 and on October 18 from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Call 294-5366 or visit our web site listed below for further Information and registration materials.

To find out more about any of the Clean Sweep programs, please call 294-5366 to hear a detailed, recorded message. You may also refer to the City of Madison,"Recylopedia.
