Tobacco Vendor Compliance Program

Adopted in 1994, Madison General Ordinance 23.385 prohibits the sale of tobacco products to minors and regulates the location of cigarette vending machines to avoid access to minors. This ordinance has been actively enforced by the Madison Department of Public Health since 1995. Since this time, Madison has seen a reduction in tobacco sales to minors. In 1995, 66% of Madison vendors were found to sell tobacco to minors, while in 2004, 6.1% of vendors sold tobacco to a minor. The Department's efforts over the years have shown that continued enforcement and vendor education are essential for maintaining and improving tobacco vendor compliance in Madison.
