On 6/15/2009 at approximately 1:00am, a Madison Police Officer observed a suspicious individual walking near the 3100 block of Muir Field Road. The subject was described as a male carrying a black backpack and wearing a black mask. Officers began canvassing the vicinity, and an officer would locate and pursue the suspect toward the 2900 block of Cimarron Trail. The officer momentarily lost sight of the suspect in the pursuit, and a canine search began as additional officers set up a perimeter to locate the masked subject. The canine located a black backpack during the track, and upon further inspection would find approximately 1900 grams or just over 4 lbs of packaged marijuana. Approximately $300 in cash was also seized.
Officers would do additional surveillance in the area of 2900 Cimarron Trail, and a male matching the earlier description, crawling in the bushes in the same location where the backpack of marijuana was found. Officers confronted the resistive suspect and questioned him about why he was crawling around in the bushes at 4:00AM. No response was given by the suspect as to his activity at such an odd time of the night. The suspect was described as ‘Drenched with sweat’, and when asked about this interesting fact after contact, he stated he was just so shocked by the police. The suspect, later identified as Vadim B. Srug, was taken into custody and booked into the Dane County Jail on charges of Possession with intent to Deliver THC and Resisting.
This case went exceptionally well with officers following up on suspicious activity, and being resilient in their efforts to use all investigative resources on this call. The involvement of the canine track led officers to a sizable amount of illegal drugs, and eventually a suspect that was connected to the found backpack. The coordinated effort, in this particular case, shows the importance of dedicated departmental resources such as the Canine Unit. |
