Metro Redux: Bus Shelters on State Street

The State Street Design Project was initiated from within the City of Madison Department of Planning and Development in 2001 in order to revitalize the city’s most famous street. State Street connects the heart of downtown to the UW-Madison Campus with a row of theaters, museums, restaurants, taverns, boutiques and art galleries. The street is open only to buses, bicycles and pedestrian traffic.

New bus passenger shelters were selected as the single most important infrastructure element along the street, drawing attention to public transportation and the artistic potential of our built environment. The bus passenger shelter design opportunity was a collaboration between the Madison Arts Commission, the Department of Planning and Development and Madison Metro. The goal for the new shelters was aesthetic quality and street enhancement as well as functional ability during Madison’s long winter.
