Another summer in the City and another year of the Wanda Fullmore Internship program! We had a great kick off this week and I was delighted to meet with the high school interns and their families.
The goal of the internship program is to provide high school age youth on the job experience, exposure to the world of work, and career awareness through placement in a City Department and direct support from a non-profit intermediary. Benefits to the City Departments include positive public relations and connections with youth from the broader community; energy and new ideas from youth perspectives; work on a special projects; opportunities for learning through teaching; and an ability to invest in our community's goals to address disparities in employment and educational success. My thanks to Commonwealth for the training and support that organization provides the young people.
Wanda Fullmore retired from the City of Madison in 2015 after 39 years of service. She too started as an intern and it is wonderful that she is able to welcome the new interns to their positions each year. She has a wealth of experience and can share some stories!
I know City staff is looking forward to working with the young people from throughout the City again this summer. Who knows, a few of them may end up with a career here!
