Sina Davis at Common Council Meeting

It was an honor for all of us at this week's Common Council meeting to honor Ms. Sina Davis, a community leader in the Allied Drive area. We all owe her a debt of gratitude and the resolution unanimously passed is a small way to express our appreciation.

WHEREAS, on Tuesday, July 11, 2017, the City of Madison honors Ms. Sina Davis for her community service and appreciation of the lifelong impact she has had on her Madison neighborhood; and,
WHEREAS, Ms. Davis is a local leader committed to serving her community and has piloted many community projects in the Allied Drive neighborhood where she has lived since 2010; and,
WHEREAS, the Allied Drive neighborhood lost access to essential services, and residents have struggled to obtain affordable healthy groceries ever since; and,
WHEREAS, Ms. Davis was a founder of the Allied Community Cooperative, supported its efforts to establish a grocery store in the Allied Drive neighborhood and through partnerships with the City of Madison and the Willy Street Cooperative, the grocery store is on track to begin building out the physical space in 2018; and,
WHEREAS, Ms. Davis previously served on the board of the Allied Wellness Center and helped start a local chapter of Mothers in the Neighborhood; and,
WHEREAS, the Allied Drive neighborhood has become a safer and more welcoming neighborhood as a result of the tireless efforts of Ms. Davis together with her friends and neighbors; and,
WHEREAS, Ms. Davis rebuilt her life after addiction and homelessness in Chicago and has become an indefatigable advocate for her neighborhood; and,
WHEREAS, Ms. Davis recently celebrated five years as a Porchlight Case Manager and Resource Specialist for homeless individuals, where she was dedicated to her clients at Truax and Hospitality House; and,
WHEREAS, when Ms. Davis was asked what motivated her to be so involved in her neighborhood she said, "I've always wanted to be an asset to my community. I ran the streets a lot, so I figured I could take some of that energy and do it in a positive way. I want to let others know that you can build your community. Where you live is all yours and you can make things happen.",
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Mayor and Common Council of the City of Madison thank Ms. Sina Davis for her years of dedicated service and express their profound gratitude to her efforts in the Allied Drive neighborhood and to the City of Madison.

As I told Sina last night, those of us in government, those of us in formal organizations, we are a resource to serve, but a neighborhood is absolutely nothing without the people who lead it and set the standard and our own job is to follow you and give you support. Thank you for that leadership and the legacy of it with all the other people of the neighborhood that you inspired.
