Earlier this summer the Common Council adopted a new City of Madison vision, mission, values, and service philosophy through Resolution 18-00573, "Establishing the City of Madison Performance Excellence Framework and Implementation and On-going Sustainability Efforts."
The City of Madison has initiated several key planning efforts and engagement initiatives in the past several years including Results Madison, Imagine Madison, the Comprehensive Plan, and the Racial Equity and Social Justice Initiative. The change in vision and mission arose from an identified need for alignment, collaboration, and a clear system to prioritize the city's actions. In the past several months, city managers, deputy mayors, and alders have joined to create a team called the Performance Excellence Initiative to coordinate this alignment, collaboration, and prioritization of the city's work.
I am very grateful to the community members who provided their input into the Imagine Madison Comprehensive Plan, which largely informed our vision, mission, and values, as well as the City of Madison employees who provided feedback to us.
City agencies will be focusing on a few key things over the next several years based on the direction our vision, mission, and values provide. We will be:
1.) Creating a clear system for continuously hearing from our employees, residents, and customers
2.) Planning and budgeting so that we are using data to inform our decisions and track our progress
3.) Intentionally aligning all of our work to the city's vision, mission, and values
I look forward to sharing our progress with you over the next months as your city government works to make our vision a reality for all: Our Madison – Inclusive, Innovative & Thriving.
