Head Downtown for Shake the Lake!

June 25, 2015 4:50 PM

Madison begins its celebration of Independence Day this weekend with Shake the Lake on the shores of Lake Monona on Saturday evening.  For complete details on the event schedule of activities, viewing options and parking, please go to the Shake the Lake website.

There will be plenty of family-friendly, free activities complete with music beginning at 5 and the fireworks begin at 10.  There is ample parking in the downtown area and road closures will be minimal, so whether you are walking, biking or driving, there should be no problem gaining access to the event.

The City Parking Utility website www.bit.ly/cityparking displays real-time parking availability for each of the City-owned parking facilities. To make parking entrance and exiting easy, the Government East Garage, Brayton Lot and Wilson Lot will be $5 "Pay on Entry" facilities.  All other City garages will charge by the hour with a $5 maximum fee for the day.  Feel free to access parking availability with your smart phone to check openings in individual ramps.

Road closures will be kept to a minimum this year; John Nolen Drive will be closed between Broom Street and Blair Street from 6:00 a.m. Saturday, June 27 until 6:00 a.m. Sunday June 28.  Broom Street will be open to and from John Nolen Drive Wilson Street and Williamson Street will also be open.

There will also be fireworks celebrations at Warner Park and Elver Park later in the week so we will have a few opportunities to spend some time oohing and aahing.  My thanks to many City staffers who are working with the Madison Mallards to make Shake the Lake a great event, hopefully the first of many.  Thanks too to Festival Foods who is sponsoring this event.  They will truly be a great addition to Madison!
