Shutting It Down to Open It Up
August 27, 2009 11:51 AM
This Sunday from 8 AM to 2 PM we're going to open up six miles of streets in downtown Madison for walkers, runners, skateboarders, strollers, rollerskaters and just people in general. With cars out of the picture for six great hours, it's a chance to see your city from a whole different perspective. It's called Ride the Drive, and it's the inaugural year for what we hope will be an annual community event.
You can just come and walk around, or you can participate in any of several different events including a kids' bike rodeo, a bike parade, chalk art in the street, and the city's longest picnic table. I'll be there myself all day starting with a three mile run with Suzy Favor Hamilton beginning at Olin Park and ending at the Capitol. Suzy will also conduct a running clinic at 10:30 AM on the Square.
For details and a complete list of events see
www.cityofmadison.com/ridethedrive.
Free, open-to-the-public, and a family event with plenty of activities and entertainment along the 6-mile route for kids and adults of all ages, Ride the Drive is a whole new way to experience our great city. I hope you'll join me there this Sunday.
