Congratulations to our Dump the Pump Contest Winners! Dump the Pump June 20

In honor of Dump the Pump Day, Metro wanted you to share your story! In response, Metro received many stories about the awesome benefits of Dumping the Pump with Metro Transit.

Michele Leighton's story:

"I’ve been riding Metro for 37 years.  Riding Metro is a GREAT way to save not only on gas and wear and tear on my vehicle, but it also has allowed me time to read, a chance to get to know my neighbors, and also takes away the stress of driving in rush hour traffic.

When we bought our house in 1991, we were specifically looking for one that was on a bus route.  When we found a house for sale in the neighborhood we liked, I went to the street to see if there was a bus stop nearby and, lo and behold, the bus stop was our driveway!

It has been such a “no brainer” to use Metro for my transportation needs -- not only for all the reasons mentioned above, but a few years ago my employer began subsidizing our 31-day Metro bus passes, making it even more attractive to use Metro for my daily commute to and from work!

I can’t tell you the number of great people I have met and gotten to know because I had the chance to meet them while waiting for a bus either downtown or in my neighborhood.  I so enjoy not having to drive myself to and from work -- my bus ride allows me to get my head ready for the work day in the morning, and allows me to wind down after work so I come home calm and relaxed.

The Metro Drivers and Customer Service personnel are also great people.  I have generally found them to be very friendly and helpful, and this is especially appreciated when I’m using the bus to get to or from somewhere I don’t usually visit.  In taking the time to get to know some of the drivers a little bit, I have actually made a friend who also regularly attends Madison Mallards baseball games.

I couldn't ask for better transportation service than what I’ve gotten from Madison Metro over these many years of happy ridership."

Thank you for your story submissions!

Dump the pump day

National Dump the Pump Day is a day that public transportation systems nationwide encourage individuals to ride public transportation rather than driving as a way to save money and remain environmentally friendly.

Did you know:

  • that a two-person household that downsizes to one car can save as much as $9,700 a year?
  • every year public transportation reduces our nation’s carbon emissions by 37 million metric tons?
  • Every $1 billion invested in public transportation creates and supports 36,000 jobs?

Go Green! Ride Metro.

Recent studies show that one of the most signicant actions people can take to reduce their carbon footprint is to reduce their driving.

Riding the bus helps to create a healthier environment by reducing smog-producing pollutants and greenhouse gases.

Through the use of hybrid buses, ultra-low sulfur fuel its use of and Green Power, Metro takes that effort even further. Learn more.
