South Capitol Transit Oriented Development

District Planning Study

The recently adopted City of Madison Downtown Plan includes many recommendations regarding the future vision of the area south of the Capitol Square. The South Capitol Transit Oriented Development District Planning Study (SCTOD) is focused on moving key recommendations from the Downtown Plan towards implementation. The study is being overseen by the South Capitol District Planning Committee which will make recommendations to the Common Council about how to proceed at the conclusion of the study.

The SCTOD planning district stretches from Bedford Street to Street and includes the area between Wilson Street and Lake Monona. The purpose of the planning study is to identify transportation improvement projects and further define opportunities for development consistent with the Downtown Plan with easy access to a variety of transportation modes.

Goals and Objectives:

  • Improve connections to other cities by evaluating a location and operational function for an intermodal transit facility.
  • Improve accessibility to the Downtown for all modes of transportation
  • Evaluate better connections across John Nolen Dr.
  • Improve the safety and aesthetics of key gateway intersections
  • Identify redevelopment opportunities
