Metro Plans to Refurbish Existing Shelters

In October 2011, Metro received $5 million dollars as part of a federal grant intended to put Americans back to work, repairing, rebuilding and modernizing the nation's transit infrastructure.

As part of this grant, Metro will be refurbishing 75 existing bus shelters with new roofs, benches and LED lighting.

After reviewing the bus shelter survey results, Metro found that our riders' two highest priorities are the presence of benches and lighting at every shelter. Instead of fully replacing 25 outdated shelters, Metro plans to refurbish 75. Each shelter will have a new roof equipped with solar powered, motion-sensor LED lighting, and benches. The roofs will also have a new design and once installed, have improved Metro markings to avoid confusion.

Metro has starting its purchasing process and taking inventory of current benches. Installation will start in 2013 and continue into 2014.

Thank you to everyone who participated in the bus shelter survey.

It is Metro's goal to use the grant money to better serve our customers, and make for an extraordinary transit experience!
