REVIEW THE NEW DRAFT ZONING MAP

The City is preparing a draft Zoning Map which assigns new zoning districts to all properties within the City of Madison. The draft map will be presented for initial public review and comment at a series of open houses in September and October 2011.

You are invited to attend and provide initial feedback on the draft map at one or more public open houses, which will be held from 4:00-8:00 p.m. at locations across the city based on groupings of aldermanic districts (see map below). Alders will attend, and City Planning and Zoning Staff will be there to answer questions and collect comments. Your feedback is important, and will help the City prepare a revised draft of the Zoning Map in the months ahead.

The downtown zoning districts WILL NOT be discussed at the fall open houses. View how this affects parts of Aldermanic Districts 2, 4, 6, and 8, here. The draft Zoning Map for the areas shaded in gray will be presented at a future open house that will be held after the land use and building height recommendations in the ongoing Downtown Plan are finalized.

CITY BEGINS WORK ON NEW ZONING MAP

The City is beginning the process of preparing a new zoning map for the City, which will assign zoning districts from the recently adopted zoning code to every property in the City of Madison.

Review of the Discussion Draft Zoning Map by the Zoning Code Rewrite Advisory Committee will occur during the summer of 2011, beginning on July 20, 2011. The process of drafting the zoning map will begin with review of the discussion draft map (Map 1) listed below and the background information:

Discussion Draft Zoning Maps
Proposed Zoning Districts - Entire City
Existing Land Use
Existing Zoning Map
Comprehensive Plan Generalized Future Land Use
Public Participation and Mapping Methodology memorandum
New Zoning Districts

Zoning Map 1 will be reviewed over the coming months and a new map will be drawn based on comments and recommendations received from committees, commissions, boards and the general public. This review will include a series of open houses that will be held throughout the community during the fall of 2011.

Comments on the Discussion Draft Zoning Map (Map 1) can be sent to the city via the Contact Page, by e-mail or by mail.  Please contact Rick Roll, Zoning Code Rewrite project manager if you have any questions.  Mr. Roll can be reached at rroll@cityofmadison.com or 608-267-8732.

CITY COUNCIL ADOPTS NEW ZONING CODE

At its March 29, 2011 meeting, the Madison Common Council adopted the new zoning code. Work on the code began in December of 2007. While the new zoning code was adopted, the new zoning map and downtown zoning districts are not yet complete. Work continues on these items and is expected to continue through 2011. It is important to understand that the new zoning code does not take effect until the new zoning map is adopted. In the interim, the existing zoning code and map are in effect.

Check the Zoning Code Rewrite website often for updates on upcoming meetings on the downtown zoning districts, zoning map and potential amendments to the adopted zoning code.
