The first week in January typically begins the annual exodus of retiring MFD personnel.

Today, of course is the last official day for retiring Chief Debra Amesqua. But it is also the last day for Lt. John Suter, Lt. Laura Agostini, and Firefighter/Paramedic William White.

Suter joined the Department on February 4, 1980. Agostini and White were hired March 25, 1985.

Agostini is working her last day on the job at Station 3, 1217 Williamson St. White is at Station 9, 201 N. Midvale Blvd. Suter's last workday was in December.

This Friday, January 6 is the retirement date for Assistant Chief Gregg Knudtson.

Knudtson, the second of three generations of Knudtson firefighters, retires after 31 years with the City of Madison Fire Department.

He joined the Department on January 4, 1981. His father Donald was a Shift Commander at the time, equivalent to today's Division Chief. In 2004, Chief Knudtson's son Andy became the third generation of Knudtsons to join the MFD.
