Discarded Cigarette Caused Blackwolf Fire - Update

December 10, 2009

City of Madison fire investigators believe a cigarette discarded in attached garage caused a fire that damaged a home in the 8300 block of Blackwolf Drive earlier this week.

Firefighters were called to the residence at 1:10 a.m Tuesday morning. On arrival, firefighters observed flames coming from a garage at the rear of the single family home.

Ladder Company 2 entered the front of the home to attack the fire from the interior, in an effort to prevent the spread of the fire into the living area.

There were three occupants home at the time. They reported hearing their dog barking and awoke to the sound of smoke alarms. All three evacuated the home. Two people were transported to UW Hospital where they were treated and released.

Firefighters had the fire knocked down by 1:25. Fire was contained to the garage, though there was some light smoke damage to the home. The garage and its contents, including a single vehicle are expected to be a total loss, with a preliminary damage estimate of $50,000.

The cause is under investigation.
