City of Madison fire investigators have determined that discarded smoking materials were the cause of Tuesday's fire at 1734 Winchester St. Investigators say the fire started in the basement of the two-story home.
Firefighters battled the fire for more than an hour before bringing it under control. The house is a total loss, with damage estimates set at $250,000 for the house and its contents.
Only one person was home at the time of the fire. She escaped without injury and took refuge at a neighbor's house, where she was joined by the rest of her family.
The lengthy fire attack resulted in several feet of water in the basement and slippery conditions for firefighters in the frigid temperatures. One firefighter was treated and transported for an ankle injury. Water had to be pumped out of the basement before the investigation could proceed.Contacts:
