Fire Damages Local Feed Business

Tuesday, June 22, 2010 - 6:30pm

A local feed business suffered major fire and smoke damage on Madison's east side tonight. T C Products Company, located at 1040 Lumbermans Trail, produces a variety of animal feeds. The business was closed at the time of the fire and no employees were on site.

Firefighters at Station 5, less than a block away, reported the fire at 7:00 PM and were on the scene within two minutes. Smoke and flames were coming from the building as they arrived. The crew from Engine 5 was stretching a hose to extinguish the fire when two propane tanks stored next to the building exploded.

The fire was declared under control forty minutes after the fire attack was started. Damage to the building and contents is estimated to be $400,000.

Due to the hot humid conditions, firefighters were rotated to a rehab area where they could cool down, drink some water, and allow their bodies to rest before returning to a work assignment. This reduces firefighter injuries and exhaustion on an emergency scene.

Madison Gas and Electric responded to the scene to turn off electric service to the business. The Madison Water Utility was contacted to boost water pressure in the area due to the large amount of water needed to fight the fire.

The cause of this fire is under investigation. No injuries were reported at the fire scene.
