Firefighters Contain Diesel Spill

Thursday, October 7, 2010 - 6:00pm

City of Madison Firefighters stopped a diesel fuel spill from entering Lake Mendota Thursday evening. Engine 4 was called to the Walnut Street Heating Plant at 505 Walnut Street at 4:58 PM. When firefighters arrived on scene, they were told that an unknown amount of diesel fuel had leaked while a truck was pumping the fuel into a tank at the plant.

The spilled fuel had entered a nearby storm sewer drain that flowed into Willow Creek. Firefighters stopped the flow of fuel into the storm drain and then checked for fuel in the creek. Floating booms were placed in the creek to contain the spilled fuel, preventing it from flowing into Lake Mendota.

Madison's Hazardous Incident Team responded to the scene to provide booms and assist with containing the spill. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources was notified of the spill and a contractor was called to the scene to clean up the spilled fuel.

All fire department units were cleared from the scene by 7:05 PM. No injuries were reported at this incident.
