HazMat Team Responds to Odor Investigation at 1 N. Bedford Street

On Sunday, October 10, 2010 shortly after 11:00 am, Engine 1 responded to an odor complaint at 1 North Bedford Street. Firefighters investigated the 2nd floor apartment and spoke to the occupants who were complaining of a strong odor of cleaning agents. Firefighters were unable to detect any odors on the second floor and returned. Madison Police were also called to assist at the scene.
At 12:00 pm, Engine 1, Medic 6, Car 31, & HIT 6 (Hazardous Incident Team) were dispatched to return to 1 North Bedford Street by Madison Police after finding multiple bottles and containers of cleaning agents in an apartment on the 3rd floor directly above the complainants. The HazMat Team monitored the air quality and found all levels normal.
The two occupants of the second floor apartment admitted themselves to St. Mary's Hospital. Their condition is unknown, but believed to be non-life threatening condition.
City Health Department also responded to the scene and cleared everyone to return to the building.
1 North Bedford is a 28-unit apartment complex which houses approximately 40 people. The bottom floors are offices. Less than 20 people were displaced at the time of the incident.Contacts:
