Madison Parks receives State Award for the Goodman Pool Waves

The Wisconsin Park and Recreation Association awarded the Madison Parks Division a Silver Star Award of Excellence for Youth Recreation Programming for the Goodman Pool Waves at the state conference in Green Bay last week.
Silver Star Awards were given to programs displaying excellence in recreation programming for youth, adults and creative marketing. The applications and programs were evaluated and judged by Park and Recreation professionals throughout the state.
The Goodman Pool Waves was developed through a strategic community partnership between the Shelley Glover Sports Education Foundation (SGSEF), Madison Parks, and the Robert D and Irwin A Goodman Foundation. A key strategic SGSEF initiative in 2011 was to realize the development of a competitive swim team at Goodman Pool that could compete within the Madison All-City Swim League.
The Goodman Pool Waves swim team was available to children ages 6 - 18, hosted week-day practices and participated in week-end meets, culminating with the All-City swim meet at the end of July. The swim team was open to any city of Madison resident, and scholarships were available to those with financial need.
"Madison Parks is so honored to have received this award," said Kevin Briski, Madison Parks Superintendent. "The Goodman Pool Waves is one of the most exciting programs I've worked on in my career. The community partnerships with the Shelley Glover Sports Education Foundation and the Goodman Foundation have shown us what good things can happen when our community comes together."
This initiative's goal was to bring youth who primarily swim at the public pool and may not have any experience with swim teams, the opportunity to enjoy the physical, mental and emotional benefits inherent in participating on a swim team.
One of these newcomers to the sport was 12-year-old Pierre, whose prior connection to swimming was only through movies and television. Despite this, he insisted on trying swimming after hearing about the new Waves team.
"In my heart, I felt I should swim," Pierre said. "I love to exercise and just be in the water."
Pierre noticed some definite improvements in his swimming. "The coaches were willing to help you anytime and help you with anything," he said. "I never knew how to back float, now I can do backstroke and even breaststroke."
Registration for the 2012 Goodman Pool Waves Team will begin in March of 2012. For more information, visit www.cityofmadison.com/parks/poolContacts:
