Mayor Praises Senate Passage of Low-Income Tax Exemption Legislation
January 31, 2008
Madison - Mayor Dave Cieslewicz praised today's unanimous State Senate vote in favor of legislation clarifying the property tax status of low-income housing projects (SB 403). The legislation now moves to the State Assembly for consideration.
"This has been a difficult issue to resolve, but thanks to a great deal of hard work and compromise from all sides, we are now a big step closer to providing low-income housing providers with clear rules regarding the tax status of their properties," said Mayor Cieslewicz. "I am grateful for the efforts of State Senators Lena Taylor, Russ Decker, Fred Risser, Jon Erpenbach and Mark Miller for their help in shepherding through this legislation successfully. I also appreciate the assistance and advocacy of Madison's low-income housing developers.
"Now that this legislation has passed the Senate, I hope it will move quickly through the Assembly and reach the Governor's desk for his consideration. Enactment of this legislation is extremely important for the many organizations in our community that provide low-income housing for Madison families."
