MFD Station #12 Wins National Design Award

Monday, October 26, 2009 - 9:39am

The City of Madison Fire Department's newest fire station will be featured in the November issue of Fire Chief Magazine as the recipient of the publication's Silver place 2009 Station Style Design Award.

Fire Chief sponsors an annual competition to honor design excellence in Fire Stations across the country. Station #12 won the silver in the Career Fire Station Design category.

Ground was broken for the new station last November at 400 South Point Road. The firehouse began operations in early August, and opened to the public on August 24.

Fire Chief Magazine lists among its criteria for recognition a reflection of the changing role of fire departments across the country, with special attention paid to fire sprinklers in these facilities and meeting rooms for the community. In the nine years since the competition began, judges have also noted a significant increase in environmental awareness in fire departments. Station #12 was designed and built to meet standards for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification. The winners are selected by a panel of fire chiefs and architects.
