One Worker Injured by Chemical
January 27, 2010
One person was injured this morning at Oscar Mayer Foods when a chemical splashed in his face. Paramedics were called at 7:09 this morning to treat the worker and transport him to UW Hospital. The injuries were non-life threatening.
Engine 10 was requested a short time later to assist Oscar Mayer staff with the spilled product. Employees were initially evacuated from a small area near the spill until more information was available. Firefighters from Engine 10 and members of the Madison Fire Department Hazardous Incident Team identified the chemical and its hazards.
Less than five gallons of an alkaline material known as Quadexx 100 were spilled into a containment tank designed to catch chemical leaks or spills at the factory. Engine 10 verified that the leak was stopped and that there was no hazard to the environment or the public. They released the scene to Oscar Mayer employees who are responsible for cleaning up chemical spills.
