January 17, 2012 - Today, we received a couple of inches of snow. Some of the winter activities can take place, others still need more snow or sustained cold temperatures.
Ice Skating Rinks - For today, all of the outdoor ice rinks are closed. Staff is working on public safety snow removal and on rink maintenance. For your safety, please stay off of the rinks. Rink conditions are slushy, open water, and unsafe - particularly on the edges. Madison Parks staff will continue to work on rink maintenance and will open them as soon as conditions are safe.
Sledding Hills - With today's snowfall, the sledding hills are in business again. Elver Park warming house will be open tonight. After your sledding hill run - stop in, warm up and enjoy a cup of hot cocoa. Remember, sledding is at your own risk, exit the bottom of the hill and walk up the sides of the hill.
Ski Trails - Today, staff is packing the trails at Elver Park (west trails only) and tomorrow at Odana Hills Golf Course (main loop trails only). The conditions are more suited to skate skiing. Several more inches of snow is needed in order to groom the trails with tracks. Due to drifting and blowing snow, some parts of the trails may have open grass. MadNorSki will be having their Tuesday night races at Elver Park. The lights will be on.
Snowshoeing - Snowshoers must stay on the trails. Please note snowshoes are not allowed on cross country ski trails at anytime. Madison Parks does not rent snowshoes.
Please keep in mind that there needs to be sufficient snow to create a base for snowshoeing. The woods generally need more snow to fall because the trees protect the trails. For a list of parks to snowshoe in: http://www.cityofmadison.com/parks/snowshoeing/Contacts:
