Public Invited to Meet New Water Utility General Manager

Madison-The public is invited to meet the new General Manager of the Madison Water Utility, Tom Heikkinen, next week on Tuesday, August 26, preceding the meeting of the Water Utility Board. Heikkinen will available beginning at 4:00 p.m., and the board meeting will begin at 4:30 p.m. at the utility's offices located at 119 East Olin Avenue.

Heikkinen began work with the City on August 4. Previous to assuming his current position, he was Chief of Plant Operations at the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission. During his 15 years at that utility, he worked with a team of 270 employees in providing 170 million gallons per day of clean drinking water to 1.8 million people in the Maryland suburbs surrounding Washington, D.C. He oversaw a water distribution system that covered 1,000 square miles with more than 50 storage tanks. He was also responsible for returning clean water to the environment through effective wastewater treatment.

Heikkinen earned both his Bachelor's degree in civil engineering and his Masters of Engineering from the University of Maryland.
