Get the Smartest Card at Madison Public Library
September is Library Card Sign-Up Month, and Madison Public Library wants to make sure that Madisonians have the smartest card of all - a free library card.
"A library card has always been an important school supply," says Barbara Dimick, Library Director. "Children, teens and their families can visit the library to get homework help and check out books, as well as check out free music and movies, or use library computers for research or writing and designing school projects."
A recent study by the American Library Association also showed that families use libraries to spend time together. Forty-four percent of survey respondents report taking their children to the library for this reason.
Libraries aren't just for children, though. University students can use the library for supplemental reading and research, free computer and wireless access, and no-cost popular music and movies. Adults have access to a wide range of free services and resources, from popular collections to subscription-based research databases accessible via the internet for free with their public library card. Popular databases include Morningstar Investment Research Center, LearningExpress standardized testing practice, NoveList reading recommendations, and Demographics Now, a new market research database that allows business owners to locate target markets for their products and services nationwide.
A library card is a smart investment anytime, but especially in today's economy. A free card is a ticket to learning job skills, researching careers, starting a business, saving money with do-it-yourself projects, or avoiding costly fees for movie rentals, music downloads or internet access.
During the month of September, Madison Public Library will be giving a small gift to everyone who signs up for a new library card, adults and children alike. Madisonians are encouraged to take advantage of the many free resources offered at their public library, and will receive a fun reminder thanking them for using the smartest card around.
For more information on signing up for a library card, visit one of Madison's nine public libraries or the library's web site at http://www.madisonpubliclibrary.org
