Secondhand Dealer Ordinance

New Law Takes Effect February 1st

A new city ordinance will soon change the way in which secondhand dealers report transactions to the Madison Police Department. In the run-up to the February 1, 2012 start date, the City Clerk has posted detailed information about the new law. It can be accessed at www.cityofmadison.com/secondhandDealer .

Under the ordinance, pawnbrokers, and other secondhand dealers, will be required to electronically report purchases on a daily basis via web based software. The new protocal will replace a cumbersome and slow paper system.

"These businesses have the ability to receive and transfer stolen property easily and quickly," said Captain Jim Wheeler. Wheeler is in charge of the MPD's Investigative Support Section.

Police Chief Noble Wray said of the new ordinance: "This is about increasing public safety by making it tougher for thieves, burglars, and drug addicts to peddle stolen goods for cash."
