Current Works by Emelia E Haglund
Madison Municipal Building ARTspace May 1-June 29, 2012
"Current Works," a solo show of Emelia E. Haglund's large-scale weavings, will be exhibited in Madison Municipal Building Art Space from May 1 through June 29, 2012. Haglund uses pattern and imagery to generate meaningful conversations with her audience. She challenges the concept of fabric and décor, leaving opportunity for a new, hybrid design that qualifies as art.
Her artist statement explains, "Pulling from global affairs, disasters, human condition, and even the current political climate in my home state, I use my jacquard loom to translate a modern, often tumultuous, universe into a tactile experience that lures with the temptation of soft touch, but repels visually. Aesthetically, my designs indicate an observation of the invasion of our environment by social development, as well as reflections on contemporary challenges."
For more information about her art-making process, be sure to check out the display case at the far end of the lobby near the Credit Union. Haglund hand draws her design and then uses computer-aided technology to digitize the pattern, an air compressor assists her at the loom but her process of hand weaving is still slow, rhythmic, and meditative.
The Madison Arts Commission's ARTspace program is open to all Madison visual artists who would like to showcase original two-dimensional works in highly utilized city spaces. For more information visit our website at www.cityofmadison.com/mac.
