January 13, 2012 - The winter weather has arrived. Some of the winter activities can take place, others still need more snow or sustained cold temperatures.
Ice Skating Rinks - For Friday, January 13, 2012 and Saturday, January 14, ONLY Vilas Park upper skating rinks are open. All other ice skating rinks, including Vilas Park lagoon are closed due to thin ice and dangerous conditions. All of the rinks have had open water due to the warm weather and are now covered with a thin layer of insulating snow cover. For your safety, please stay off of the rinks. Staff will be working this weekend on maintenance. An additional update will be provided on Sunday morning.
The ice skating party at Tenney Park has been postponed until Friday, January 20.
Sledding Hills - The good news is….with any amount of snow, the sledding hills will be open. Staff made snow this morning at the Elver Park sledding hill. Elver Park warming shelter will also be open this weekend. After your sledding hill run - stop in, warm up and enjoy a cup of hot cocoa. Remember, sledding is at your own risk, exit the bottom of the hill and walk up the sides of the hill.
Ski Trails - January 13 - Staff is packing the trails at Elver Park (west trails only) and at Odana Hills Golf Course (main loop trails only). The conditions are more suited to skate skiing. Several more inches of snow is needed in order to groom the trails with tracks. Due to drifting and blowing snow, some parts of the trails may have open grass. The lights will NOT be on at Elver Park ski trail.
Snowshoeing - Snowshoers must stay on the trails. Please note snowshoes are not allowed on cross country ski trails at anytime. Madison Parks does not rent snowshoes.
Please keep in mind that there needs to be sufficient snow to create a base for snowshoeing. The woods generally need more snow to fall because the trees protect the trails.
