January 20, 2012 - Several ice rinks are open but snow covered. Staff worked on snow removal this morning, and will again on Saturday morning. It is very important that people DO NOT shovel off the rinks. Leaving piles of snow on the rink will create piles of ice. This will make the maintenance tomorrow morning all the more difficult as staff is trying to prepare rinks for Saturday.
Ice Skating Rinks - The rinks that are open tonight are: Vilas Park (General/hockey (no boards)/parts of lagoon), Elver Park general rink, Westmorland general/hockey, Goodman Park, Hillington Green, and Wexford Park. Again, it is very important that people DO NOT shovel off the rinks. Leaving piles of snow on the rink will create piles of ice. This will make the maintenance tomorrow morning all the more difficult as staff is trying to prepare rinks for Saturday.
Please check back tomorrow for further updates.
Sledding Hills - Sledding hills are snow covered and ready for sledding! After your sledding hill run at Elver Park - stop in, warm up and enjoy a cup of hot cocoa at the concession area in the warming shelter. Remember, sledding is at your own risk, exit the bottom of the hill and walk up the sides of the hill.
Ski Trails - Staff will be rolling and packing trails on Saturday morning at Elver Park and Odana Hills. The fluffly snow is not good snow for setting tracks. The lights will be on at Elver Park
Snowshoeing - Snowshoers must stay on the trails. Please note snowshoes are not allowed on cross country ski trails at anytime. Madison Parks does not rent snowshoes.
Please keep in mind that there needs to be sufficient snow to create a base for snowshoeing. The woods generally need more snow to fall because the trees protect the trails. For a list of parks to snowshoe in: http://www.cityofmadison.com/parks/snowshoeing/
