Blink installation encourages residents to get out and vote

The Madison Arts Commission (MAC) is pleased to announce, WOMEN TAKE THE POLLS!, a new BLINK temporary art project designed to get out the vote.

The proposal, submitted to MAC by The League of Women Voters of Wisconsin in conjunction with Arts + Literature Laboratory, was unanimously approved by members of the City’s Arts Commission at their October 10, 2018 meeting. It appealed to 14th district Council Member Sheri Carter, who serves as the Common Council Representative on MAC because, “We have many ways to encourage voting. The yarn bomb is the most creative way to send the message. It will be appealing to young and mature adults and both will get the message to vote."

WOMEN TAKE THE POLLS! involves lead artists Chele Isaac, Kelly Parks Snider and Rachel griffin engaging community participants to create “get out and vote” yarn-bomb cozies that will be installed as a one-of-a-kind public art installation in downtown Madison on the University of Wisconsin Campus.

“The installation is designed to capture the attention of potential voters and amplify the message that every vote matters in this November election.” Kelly Parks Snider wrote, “Our yarn-bomb broadsides will be a symbol of positive voter power!”
Through this project, residents are invited to take part of “craftivism,” aimed at encouraging Madisonians to have their vote counted in the November elections, by participating in the next Yarn Bomb Maker Day on OCTOBER 14 from 10:00am – 2:00pm at Arts + Literature Laboratory, 2021 Winnebago Street, Madison WI 53704. No particular skills are required other than the desire to inspire others to act in the interest of all. Free! All Welcome!

On OCTOBER 23 at 3:00pm-7:00pm WOMEN TAKE THE POLLS! heads to the streets. Join women artists, friends, and neighbors anytime between 3-7pm on Tuesday October 23rd by the Lincoln statue in front of Bascom Hall for the night raid installation of the cozies to Get Out the Vote! Free! All Welcome!

The yarn bomb cozies are anticipated to remain on campus from Oct 23 until at least Tuesday, November 6, Fall General Election Day in Wisconsin.
